SSY Compounding Rules & Formula Explained
SSY deposits are made annually for 15 years from account opening. From Year 16 to Year 21 (a 6-year period), zero deposits are required, yet the accumulated balance continues to compound at the prevailing annual interest rate until complete 21-year maturity.

Tips for SSY Account Holders
- Deposit your annual contribution before the 10th of the month (or early in April) so that the entire principal earns full interest for the financial year.
- Take full advantage of Section 80C deductions: deposits up to ₹1.5 Lakhs qualify for tax savings under the Old Tax Regime.
- Enjoy complete tax exemption: under EEE status, your contributions, yearly interest earned, and final maturity withdrawal are 100% tax-free.
- Maintain account active status by depositing at least the minimum mandatory ₹250 each financial year to avoid a ₹50 penalty.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming you must deposit money for 21 years: deposits are only required for the first 15 years.
- Opening more than one SSY account for the same girl child (only one account per girl child, and maximum two girls per family, is allowed).
- Missing the April 10 deadline for lump-sum deposits and missing out on an extra month of compounded interest.
- Assuming premature closure is freely permitted: withdrawals are strictly regulated for higher education after age 18 or marriage.
